The science of optical metrology and alignment, utilizing optical tools, makes it possible to achieve the highest degree of accuracy when aligning precision systems that are straight, flat, plumb or square. Sighting methods date back to the stones of the David Altars at Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt. The use of a mirror for setting squareness and alignment by in-line pinholes has been known for centuries.

The straight-edge, square and surface tables are the basic tools of the engineer and each has its counterpart in optical alignment. In optical alignment, there are three methods of optical alignment– collimation, auto-relection and auto-collimation. Direct precision measurements are made rapidly and consistently. It is no longer necessary to extrapolate readings, or to make constant adjustments and calculations.
